Finland Education 2015
Hello everyone and welcome to Finland Education 2015! On this blog, I will be posting daily updates about my amazing adventures in Finland where I am interning for three weeks.
My name is Serina Mitsu Chavez and I am a junior at High Tech High North County charter school in San Marcos, California. At my school, all juniors getting ready to enter the real world are required to do a four week internship in the Spring that will teach us necessary skills for our chosen career. For my internship, I was presented with this amazing opportunity to work at a school in Jyvaskyla, Finland. As you might know, Finland has one of the world's best education systems. Seeing as I love to teach and would love to be a teacher, I am very excited to have the opportunity to go to Finland where I will be working at a local high school and studying their world class education techniques. For four months, I fundraised for this trip and have finally made it!
At my internship, I will be making a video for a Finnish school named Jyväskylän koulutuskuntayhtymän Schildtin lukion Viitaniemen toimipiste. This video will educate English speakers of the school's best qualities and teaching techniques and invite new students to the school. Through this process, I will be working mainly with two people. The first is the school's guidance counsellor whose name is Satu. The second person is Mrs. Tina Chavez who is a teacher at High Tech High but is in Finland doing a study/internship as well. She is the person who helped me find my internship and will help guide me and answer questions when in Finland.
I am so, so excited to be going to Finland! It will be my first time ever leaving America and a HUGE accomplishment! I know I will learn so much and come back as a different person. I especially am excited to learn about how they educate students so that everyone is actually HAPPY to go to school and so that they learn and get top scores on tests. I hope to use this knowledge when I return to America to implement it in my teaching and at my school.
My only fear or nerves about my internship and travel to Finland is the same of any first-time international traveler. I am afraid of not fitting in with the culture and perhaps accidentally doing something wrong or rude. Therefore, I have spent a lot of time reading up on Finnish culture and etiquette in hopes of not making any mistakes. We'll see but I'm sure I'll be fine no matter what. It is just a little bit scary, that's it.
Please enjoy my blog and daily updates of my internship in Finland :)
